Canada increases Parents and Grandparents Super Visa stay from 2 to 5 years per visit
Effective today July 4, 2022, Canada increased the length of stay for Parents and Grandparents Super Visa to 5 years per entry.
And the longer stay kicks in even if those foreign nationals applied before July 4, as long as they arrived after that date.
As of July 4, 2022:
Parents and Grandparents Super Visa holders can stay for five years on each entry into Canada.
Current Super Visa holders also may request extension by up to two years while in Canada.
This means current Super Visa holders will now be able to stay in Canada for up to seven consecutive years.
Canada’s Immigration Minister will have the authority to designate international medical insurance companies to provide coverage to Parents and Grandparents Super Visa applicants in the future.
You may pre-qualify for a Canada immigration program.
The new policy will also allow foreign medical insurance companies to provide coverage to Super Visa candidates. Under current rules, only Canadian companies can provide the coverage. Applicants need the insurance coverage so to receive emergency health care without any cost to Canadian taxpayers.
“The enhancements to the super visa program allow family members to reunite for longer in Canada, which helps everyday Canadian citizens and permanent residents succeed and contribute to society while affording their parents and grandparents invaluable opportunities to spend time with their family,” said Immigration Minister Sean Fraser.
About Canada Parents and Grandparents Super Visa
Canada’s Parents and Grandparents Super Visa guarantees up to 10-year multiple-entry visa for parents/grandparents to Canada. It is the most popular program to sponsor parents to Canada.
Before the new policy, Super Visa allowed them to stay up to 2 years per visit. Now they can stay for up to 5 years in one visit. They can plan to visit only 2 times during the 10-year visa validity, but stay longer.
In comparison, a regular visitor visa is usually valid for a maximum period of six months.
Parents and Grandparents Super Visa operates using a lottery system. Processing time is about 8 weeks, and also applicants get their results within about 8 weeks.
Regular visitor visa vs. Parents and Grandparents Super Visa
Currently, most visitors to Canada may visit for up to six months when they first enter Canada. Visitors who wish to stay longer must apply for an extension, and pay a new fee. Parents and Grandparents Super Visa now allows them to stay for up to five years on each visit. They do not have to apply for an extension.
Holders of a Parents and Grandparents Super Visa have the rights and restrictions of a regular tourist visa holder. As such they cannot work or study while they are in Canada.
Mobility under super visa
Super Visa holders can leave Canada, come back and get extended stay.
But those who applied and entered Canada before the July 4 cut-off date are still limited to the original time they were granted to stay in the country.
“If you were granted two years, it would remain two years,” notes the immigration department.
Fortunately, there is a possible solution for those who want to a longer stay under the super visa. You will need to leave Canada before the end of your authorized stay and re-enter Canada after July 4, 2022. The border services officer may grant you a length of stay of up to five years. Alternatively, you can also apply to extend your stay in Canada for an extension of up to two years.
The possibility of two years extension enable parents and grandparents to plan a more seamless move to Canada.
Note that super visa holders must renew or maintain their medical insurance while in Canada and on re-entry.
